Depp Gets Into The Rum Diary

Posted by: Jerrica

“But why is the rum gone?” That’s now a famous question due to Johnny Depp’s cool and hilarious performance as Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” But over the last few years, fans of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson have been asking about a different rum, “The Rum Diary,” a 1959 novel by the political writer and icon of social commentary since the ‘70s.

In 1998, Depp played Thompson in the film adaptation of his book, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Thompson and Depp became close during the filming and remained friends until the author’s suicide in February 2005. Before his death, a movie version of “The Rum Diary” was trapped in production limbo, set to be directed by Benecio Del Toro, who also starred in “Fear and Loathing,” which would star Depp, Del Toro, Nick Nolte and Josh Hartnett with the screenplay being adapted by Bruce Robinson.

The film seemed lost to pre-production stasis, but Editor & Publisher reported that Depp is set to produce and star in “The Rum Diary” which will be produced by Warner Independent Pictures and Graham King’s GK Films. Depp and writer Robinson are all signed up but the rest of the cast is no longer attached to the project unfortunately. The book is based on Thompson’s days as a freelance journalist in Puerto Rico in the 1950s.
