Smoking Aces Prequel GreenLit by Universal

Joe Carnaghan has posted more updates on his direct to DVD prequel for Smoking Aces. The prequel he is working on has finally been Greenlit by Universal: Quote:

So Universal has given us the greenlight to begin the prequel script and done so with great enthusiasm. They were as adamant about NOT doing a prequel as I was about doing one but since the Nigerians NAILED the outline, they all got hipped and jumped at it. If all bodes well, we'll have a completed script inside 8 weeks and be shooting 10 weeks later.

Looks like it might be more of a prequel we're gunning for. The Nigerians and I came up with a fairly simple story that is, I think about as politically topical as you can get, under the guise of a balls-out barnburner of an action flick. I think the only reason to ever do something that goes straight to DVD (which has this malodorous vibe for some reason) is that it gives you the ability to really push it.

At one time direct to DVD was a sign of bad things, but now I find the best films go right to DVD. Plus its a sure fire way to ensure the movie makes a ton of money if it is a good flick. Who knows we might even get a three-quel out of joe! He goes on to talk about the content of the prequel.

And I don't mean pushing the obvious sex/violence tandem but pushing CONTENT and doing things from a straight storytelling angle that they (the studio) would never allow in a 'mainstream' theatrical release. That's what's exciting. Going out and sneaking up on an unsuspecting audience and doing something smart and timely and somewhat radical in tone. I'm pumped. I wish I could be more specific. As the story and script begin to allign, perhaps I can be. Without promising, I can say, with some certainty, that the Tremor Bros. will be returning...and that's as far as I want to go for now.
