The nominations are in for the 59th Annual Emmy Awards. There’s lots of talent and many of the shows and actors are some of televisions finest and best known, so there are many nominations that are not at all surprising.

“The Sopranos,” which had its series finale this season, leads the pack with 15 nominations and HBO came out on top with a grand total of 86 nominations including some for “Entourage,” “Rome,” and “Deadwood.” ABC scored a couple goals with “Ugly Betty” bringing in 11 nominations and “Grey’s Anatomy” bringing in 10. “Ugly Betty” is up for Outstanding Comedy Series along with “The Office” and “30 Rock.” “Grey’s Anatomy” joins “House,” “Heroes,” “The Sopranos,” and “Boston Legal” in the Outstanding Drama Series category. HBO’s “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” picked up a lot of nominations as well, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie. Also, AMC’s first original movie “Broken Trail” garnered a few nods, including Outstanding Miniseries and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for Robert Duvall.

Stanley Tucci got a well-deserved nod for his guest appearance on the USA series “Monk” and David Morse got a nomination for his role as Detective Tritter on “House” though this is a role many fans argue was really just a rehashing of Chi McBride’s antagonizing businessman Vogler, only in police form. Jean Smart picked up a nod for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her short yet shocking appearance in this season of “24” as Martha Logan. Marcia Gay Harden was also nominated in the same category as Smart for her superb performance in a powerful episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” that explored a terrible hate crime committed against children.

As the Lead Actor categories go, Steve Carell and Tony Shalhoub are up again along with Charlie Sheen and Alec Baldwin. Heavy competition on the Drama end of Lead Actor with Hugh Laurie, James Gandolfini, James Spader, Denis Leary, and of course Kiefer Sutherland. For Lead Actress, Patricia Arquette, Mariska Hargitay, Edie Falco, Minnie Driver, Kyra Sedgwick, and Sally Field are all big contenders in Drama with Comedy being led up by Tina Fey and America Ferrera. William Shatner is up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama as is Terry O’Quinn, but his “Lost” archnemesis Michael Emerson is also up in this category. O’Quinn sorely deserves it with Locke still standing out as one of the most intriguing and psychologically rich and well-developed characters of all the “Lost” castaways. By the way, “Lost” and “Battlestar Galactica” are both up for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Emmys.

Last but certainly not least, on the most amusing note of all, for Outstanding Music and Lyrics, two comedies took the cake; “Scrubs” the musical episode entitled “My Musical” and “Family Guy” for the episode “Peter’s Two Dads.”
