Flash Gordon comes to the Sci-Fi ChannelPosted by: JerricaIf you’ve been waiting for Flash Gordon to make a comeback, wait no more. He’s coming to the Sci-Fi Channel with his own TV series. The enduring character from the 1934 comic strip has been through his share of superheroic adventures to become a cult phenomenon. In 1936, Flash Gordon had a 13-chapter run in theatrical serials. In 1954, his character came to the wonder of the small screen in a short-lived TV series with a 39-episode run. And then, Flash Gordon found new pop culture status in the 1980 movie that was notoriously bad and yet became an inexplicably enjoyable guilty pleasure for kids and adults alike. Now, SuperHeroHype reports that "Flash Gordon" is coming back to the small screen after more than a quarter-century of absence; this could be attributed in part to the excessive camp of the 1980 movie which embedded a dated image of the character on the minds of audiences. Yet, more than 50 years since his television debut, with talks of a movie struggling to take off, this is what has come to fruition. The series is being produced by Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr. who also produced the mini-series "Earthsea" for Sci-Fi in 2004. As announced so far, it will be a 22-episode commission by the Sci-Fi Channel for a new "Flash Gordon" show to premiere in July of this year.
