Kerry Washington Talks Fantastic Four Franchise

In the 2005 "Fantastic Four" movie, Kerry Washington played Alicia Masters, the blind girlfriend of Ben Grimm, otherwise known as the popular, tormented FF hero The Thing. Washington has appeared in a handful of episode of "Boston Legal" and such films as "The Human Stain," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "The Last King of Scotland," and probably her most outstanding role to date in the Academy Award-winning biopic "Ray" appearing as the wife of the late, great Ray Charles.

In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Washington addressed a few details regarding "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" including the comic triangle that has Alicia caught between Silver Surfer and The Thing; "Yeah, that's not so much in this film." She continued to talk about how limited her role has been, especially since a few of her scenes were cut in the first film; "I like being a part of the franchise. I like the people I work with in that franchise. It would be great and fun and wonderful if I could do even more on the third one."

Washington’s casual mention of a third "Fantastic Four" flick did not go unnoticed, and when pressed about whether or not there would actually be a third one, she answered, "Not definitely, but probably." Since trilogies are all the rage in comic flicks and beyond these days ("Matrix," "X-Men" and "Spider-Man" being a few of the most prominent), why couldn’t FF flourish under the same ‘three times the charm’ philosophy of modern Hollywood? The title alone suggests that there will be a door opened with "The Rise of the Silver Surfer" that leads somewhere larger and possibly even a continuation in the third film.

After all, once "Spider-Man 3" is out of the bag, what mainstream comic film franchise does Marvel really have going for itself? Besides "Wolverine," there aren’t a whole lot of contenders to carry on Marvel’s boom while DC is getting back on its theatrical feet with "The Dark Knight" and a "Superman Returns" sequel in the works for its flagship titles.
