Top 10 Funny Films for Xmas

Posted by: Aku

There’s no better time than Christmas to spread a little cheer, and what’s the best way to spread cheer you ask? Well with DVD’s filled with hilarious antics and ridiculous plot line’s is how! So to help you spread that cheer I’ve suggested a few titles that you may have heard of, or haven’t, but all are guaranteed to please.

10. Nacho Libre- Widescreen collector’s edition
Jack Black may be by far one of the most energetic comedians in film right now, and this is perfectly exemplified in his film about a friar turned luchador (Mexican masked wrestler), Nacho Libre. Black must wrestle to raise money for the orphanage he lives at, and becomes engulfed in the fame offered by his new career. Written and directed by the Hess brothers of Napoleon Dynamite fame, the film is a great opportunity to shut your brain off and enjoy some nonsense comedy.

9. Wedding Crashers- Uncorked Edition
Released on DVD just after Christmas last year, this film is a definite must for any fan of Vince Vaughn. The story follows Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as a pair of friends whose primary form of partying consists of crashing weddings. All is going well until Wilson falls for the engaged sister of one of the brides and drags Vaughn around while he tries to woo her. This film is a great laugh fest, and Vaughn steals the scene every time he’s on film with his hilarious little rants and speech’s. A great buy for all those Vaughn and Wilson fans on your list.

8. Waiting…- 2 disc deluxe edition
A film about what really goes on behind the scenes at a franchise restaurant; Waiting stars a group of young comedians as waiters and waitress’ going through a typical day of work. The movie does a funny job at exaggerating the types of people that tend to work in these types of restaurants and how they examine the question of what to do between college and "the real world". A great buy for any one in your life that’s currently in that awkward pre-adult state.

7. The Break-Up
The biggest "date" movie of the summer was strangely enough a film about breaking up. The film stars Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn as a couple who after breaking up, remain living together because of the refusal of either of them to give up their sweet-ass condo. The film is definitely much darker than it appears in trailers and previews, but funny none the less. A great buy for any couple, but not really a good buy for a younger audience.

6. Thank you for smoking
This film is definitely not for everyone. The movie follows Aaron Eckhart as a tobacco industry lobbyist while he tries to fight against a society that knows the horrors of tobacco, but also tries to remain a hero to his son in the process. A great concept for a film and a movie that makes you laugh at the way Eckhart uses twisted logic to attempt to promote smoking. A film geared for a more mature audience, but a great satire none the less.

5. Grandma’s Boy- Unrated Edition
In my opinion, definitely the sleeper comedy of the year, Grandma’s Boy will be appreciated by anyone who has ever played a video game, or partaken in the use of illicit substances. The film (which stars all the background players from Adam Sandler’s films) is about a video game programmer that is forced to move into his grandmother’s home with her and her two roommates after losing his own apartment. The movie which really gets a raw deal while in theatres was actually one of the funniest movies that I saw this year. Probably not for everyone’s taste, it’s another comedy where you can simply sit back and turn your brain off for a while.

4. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby -Unrated Widescreen Edition
It seems like Will Ferrell is destined to release on really great comedy a year, and this year it was Talladega Nights. In it, Ferrell plays Ricky Bobby, a man who wants nothing more in life than to win, and win he does. Ferrell eventually has a mental break-down and must once again rebuild his winning persona. With great comedic support from people like Michael Clarke Duncan, Gary Cole, and especially John C. Reilly, this movie is guaranteed to tickle everyone’s funny bone. And without too much adult oriented material, this film is great for nearly the whole family. A must have this Christmas!

3. Beerfest- Unrated edition
Definitely a great buy for that man in your life, Beerfest follows a group of Americans as they compete in the National Beer Drinking Championship. There’s not much to say about the film, except you need to see it to appreciate it. It’s simply a great movie about guys drinking beer and the things that occur because of the massive drinking that occurs. From the same comedy troop (Broken Lizard) that brought you Super Troopers and Club Dread, the film follows in the same footsteps as it predecessors and is likely to delight any man between the ages of 18-35.

2. Little Miss Sunshine
Possibly the smartest comedy of the season is all about a beauty pageant; well not really about the pageant, but about the little girl trying to get to the pageant. The star studded cast includes Greg Kinnear as a bad motivational speaker, Alan Arkin as the drug using grandfather/pageant coach, Paul Dano as the Nietzsche loving brother, Steve Carell as the suicidal gay uncle, and Abigail Breslin as the young girl who’s striving to be Little Miss Sunshine. Definitely not a comedy for everyone, but if you do like it, than you’ll probably love it! Darker than conventional comedies, this one will make you wanting more from this dysfunctional family and their little yellow omnibus.

1. Things to do
Not a household name, but definitely the funniest film to be released this year. Part of Block Busters film festival collection, I rented it on a whim and instantly fell in love with it. It was one of the most original comedies that I’ve seen. The closest comparison would be somewhere between Napoleon Dynamite and Garden State. The film follows a man named Adam as he leaves his job and returns home after being subject to a tragedy. Through an unusual meeting Adam becomes paired with the not quite right Mac, and together the two decide to fulfill a list of "Things to do" that Adam was never able to accomplish through during his adolescents. This film is a great buy for anyone, and especially hits home with those people who are in that awkward transition from youth to adulthood that is often neglected to be discussed. By far the funniest film to be released this year! (http://www.thingstodomovie.com)
