Lindsay Lohan and Keira Knightley As Lesbian Lovers

"The Best Time of Our Lives" is not a movie about lesbian lovers, but the fact that Lindsay Lohan and Keira Knightley are playing the two woman engaged in a lesbian relationship has certainly drawn a lot of attention to this movie about the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and an infamous incident involving machine gun fire and a hand grenade in 1945 when tensions between Thomas and his wife led to the incident involving a couple with whom they were friends and had a complicated relationship.

Thomas was most well known for his poem "Do not go gentle into that good night," which is often praised as one of the great works of poetry of the 20th century and taught in English classes and appearing in Literature books all over the world. But, this movie seems to be focused on the dynamics of a rectangle including Thomas, his wife Caitlin MacNamara (Lohan), their childhood friend with a complex connection to both of them Vera Phillips (Knightley), and her husband-to-be William Killick. Knightley’s mother Sharman Macdonald wrote the screenplay, and her "The Jacket" director John Maybury is set to direct. It is currently scheduled to begin shooting in spring and is apparently aiming for a 2008 release.

As for the lesbian themes that have everyone talking, IGN.com quoted Lohan’s intriguing but ambiguous words to MTV; "[Keira] is older than me, but she kind of has a mysterious relationship with my lover. And then there's somewhat of a lesbian undertone." And, this is the part of the movie news that has captured widespread attention. The Sydney-Morning Herald also quoted this statement of Lohan’s referring to the lesbian tones, but the word ‘undertone’ makes it seem like it will be more latent than tangible, or visual as many seem to be thinking. Though it’s not overtly stated or known what the nature of any such romantic themes will be between the women or how explicit, if at all, the Hollywood mill is churning with this story. Buzz is lighting up the net, and everyone wants to see these two beautiful and talented actresses pair up on-screen in more ways than one.
