Shrooms (2007) Movie Review

I watched this film on the Edinburgh Film Festival on 25 Aug 2007. The films starts with introduction of 'rebel' catholic college students explaining explicitly why they are to go to Ireland : to trip on Magic Mushrooms.

Tara (a nice, innocent, virgin blonde) has arranged that her former holiday-fling from Ireland will introduce them to the world of shrooms. the surroundings speak for themselfs; A dark pinetree forest inhabited by 'hog people' who eat roadkill and a nearby correction facility /convent closed down due to gruesome murders.

It starts as a road trip movie and you get introduced to the characters in a 'matter a fact' way. Yes the 'stoner'  'jock' 'cool guy' 'pretty girl' 'smart girl' and 'innocent virgin' are all together in this. - not entirely best friends, well not at all actually, but they try to keep the peace.. for as long as it last.  Then the series of bad ideas start (I will sum up a few without giving away too much)

1: they didn't tell anyone where they were going
2: 'no mobile phone'-rule
3: they all split up at certain times to look for mushrooms (not knowing exactly what they are to look for..)

The above bad ideas are all taken before they've taken any mushrooms , but you can imagine where it goes from there.. This film does capture the spirit of using magic mushrooms and it all seems like a bad trip gone worse..  the shifting in and out the visions are well captured on film. There is one line that summed it up: "We can't all be having the same trip, can we?" It is a scary story with some twists that make you want to see the film again (and best seen when you are not tripping yourself)
