When one of them , who calls himself "The Nightrider", tries to flee from the police with a stolen V8 police car, he and his girlfriend get killed. His collegues, lead by "Toecutter", want revenge on those who killed their friend. The police officers of the MFP (Main Force Patrol).
One of the officers is "Max Rockatansky" (Mel Gibson). After visiting his best friend "Goose" (Steve Bisley) at the hospital, who was set on fire and terribly burned by Toecutter's gang, he decides to go to vacation along with his family.
But the bikers find them. After seeing them, overrunning his wife and boy with their motorbikes, he becomes "Mad Max". Along with his sawed off shotgun and a new V8 concept police car (a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe modified for the movie), he starts his own campaign of revenge....
This movie gave Mel Gibson and director George Miller international reputation. The apocalyptic vision of the future has reached cult status among SciFi fans around the world now.
"Mad Max" was originally dubbed in North-America, because the distributor thought the Americans would have problems with the Australian accent.
