It is the year 10191. Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV (José Ferrer) , the 370th in a row of cosmic Emperors, regents the galactic empire of the humankind. The planetary provinces are governed, in his name, by aristocrats.
The most precious place is "Arrakis", an arid, desert like planet. Only here it is possible to mine the "Spice Melange". All life in the universe and space travel is dependent upon the "Spice". Over Centuries the planet has been ruled by the house of "Harkonnen". Lead by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Kenneth McMillan) they had the power over the mining and oppressed the natives, called "Fremes".

But now the house of "Atreides" is taking over the regency. Duke Leto Atreides (Jürgen Prochnow), his concubine Lady Jessica (Francesca Annis) from the order of the "Bene Gesserit" and their son Paul (Kyle Maclachlan) try to end the terror and corruption. They also want to give back freedom to the "Frames". But due to a betrayal of Baron Harkonnen, they loose everything. Leto gets murdered. Paul and his pregnant mother are brought in the desert to await their dead.

But they are found by the "Fremen", who put them to their tribe. The natives are convinced, that their centuries old prophecy will be reality. They believe that Paul is their Messiah and has come to lead them to freedom, and name him "Usul Muad'Dib". And only he, who has inherited the telepathic capabilities from his mother, can control the gigantic "Sandworms". Together with an army of "Fremen" and the help of his little sister, who has been raised by the order of the "Bene Gesserit", and her psychic powers Paul Usul Muad'Dib Atreides, begins the war for "DUNE"........

Frank Herbert’s "DUNE" is definitely one of the best Science-Fiction books. In 1984, director David Lynch adapted the story and made on of the most impressive Sci-Fi- movies. Produced by Dino de Laurentis he had found a company that also wanted to see this story on the big screen and was willing to spend the money on it. Some cost have been minimized, because of shooting "Conan – The Destroyer" at the same time, at the same locations. David Lynch worked 3½ years on this movie. The complete production time from the first sketch till the first copy the film took about 6 years.

Also the large amount of stars acting in "Dune" is very impressive. Besides the actors mentioned above, we get to see Patrick Steward, Sean Young, Max von Sydow, Everett McGill, Sting, Virginia Madsen, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell……….

It was not the first attempt to bring this book on the silver screen. In the early 1970’s already Alejandro Jodorowsky tried to make a movie. With Jean Giraud and H.R. Giger in charge of the visual style. He wanted Salvador Dali to play the role of  Emperor Shaddam and the music should have been done by Pink Floyd. The movie never was shot, but some of Giger’s artwork can be seen in his "Necronomicon" book (along with his "Alien" paintings). Jodorowsky later said, that the project has been sabotaged by Hollywood, because it was French and not American.
