Miles, a struggling, forty-ish novelist, is frustrated over his stalled career and the fact that his struggling actor buddy, Jack, is about to get married. Jack loves his soon-to-be bride but is panicking about the loss of his long standing bachelorhood and the pressures he is under to join his new father-in-law's real estate firm. Miles teaches English at a private middle school and fancies himself an amateur wine connoisseur, though he's really nothing more than an alcoholic.

Two years ago Miles went through a nasty divorce and he's unwilling and unable to move on. Miles spends most of his evenings drinking and writing while trying to find a way to get published. With all this emotional baggage in tow, Miles and Jack decide to take a road trip before Jack's wedding for a week of debauchery in the Nappa Valley wine country. Along their journey the pair spend time with Miles' mother Phyllis, who moved from San Diego to Santa Barbara after the passing of her husband. Phyllis is an alcoholic herself.

Jack and Miles also meet Maya, a waitress who is trying to get a new start on life after her own divorce by working as a waitress at a high-end in Buellton. She's also pursuing her Master's degree in Education at neighboring Cal State San Luis Obispo.
