After graduating from UCLA, Tim Robbins made his professional acting debut in a multi-episode arc on the television series St. Elsewhere. At the same time, he co-founded The Actors’ Gang, a theatre ensemble now in its 24th year, for which he serves as artistic director. Among the ensemble’s productions have been Ubu Roi; The Good Woman of Szechuan; Embedded (which he later produced a filmed version of); Mephisto; The Seagull; The Guys; The Exonerated; Alagazam; and George Orwell’s 1984, which is currently touring the United States.

For his performance opposite Sean Penn and Marcia Gay Harden in Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River, Mr. Robbins won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, among other honors.

He made his feature film directing and screenwriting debuts with the award-winning political satire Bob Roberts, for which his performance was Golden Globe Award-nominated, and which marked his first collaboration with Working Title. He has since written, produced, and directed Cradle Will Rock (which earned him a Special Achievement in Filmmaking award from the National Board of Review); and, again collaborating with Working Title, Dead Man Walking (based on the book by Sister Helen Prejean), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Screenplay, as well as the Humanitas Prize and four awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. The latter film starred Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon, who won the Academy Award (among other honors) for her performance.

Mr. Robbins’ many other films as actor include Robert Altman’s Short Cuts and The Player (for which he won Golden Globe and Cannes International Film Festival Awards as Best Actor); Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing; Tony Scott’s Top Gun; Tony Bill’s Five Corners; Ron Shelton’s Bull Durham; Adrian Lyne’s Jacob’s Ladder; Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Hudsucker Proxy; Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption (for which he earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination as Best Actor); Stephen Frears’ High Fidelity; Michel Gondry’s Human Nature; Isabel Coixet’s The Secret Life of Words; and Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds.
He next stars opposite William Hurt and Bridget Moynahan in Henry Bean’s Noise.
