Sofia Carmina Coppola, daughter of director Francis Ford Coppola and cousin of Nicolas Cage, was born on the 14th of May 1971 in New York.

She gave her film debut at the age of 1 year. She portrayed the baby boy in the christening scene of her father's "The Godfather". In 1990 she replaced Winona Ryder in the role of Mary Corleone in "The Godfather III".

Ms. Coppola studied Fine Art at California Institute of the Arts. She then wrote and directed the short film "Lick the Star" (which world-premiered at the Venice International Film Festival), followed by the feature "The Virgin Suicides" (which she adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides' novel, and which world-premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival).

Sofia Coppola was the 1st American woman ever being nominated for a Best Director Academy Award ("Lost in Translation"). She also was only the 3rd overall (after Jane Campion, New Zealand and Lina Wertmüller, Italy). And she was the 1st Woman ever nominated for Best Director, best Writing (Original Screenplay) and Best Picture Academy Awards.

With her 2004 Oscar win for screen writing "Lost in Translation", she joined her family, The Coppolas, to becoming the second family (The first family is the Hustons - Anjelica Huston, John Huston and Walter Huston) to have Oscar winners in three generations with her father, Francis Ford Coppola, grandfather, Carmine Coppola, and cousin, Nicolas Cage, all winners.

Filmography: Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette (2006), Rumble Fish, Star Wars: Episode I, The Outsiders,
