Richard Donner was born April 24, 1930, in New York City. Originally an actor, he broke into directing at the helm of various television shows in the late '50s and early '60s, including classic series like The Rifleman, The Twilight Zone and The Fugitive.

Since his first feature, the 1961 sci-fi thriller X-15, Donner has directed more than 20 films. His breakthrough project was the 1976 demonic thriller The Omen, and two years later he had another blockbuster on his hands with Superman.

His career was boosted even more with the 1987 release of Lethal Weapon, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as a pair of L.A. cops who find themselves in one explosive situation after another. The film--whose three sequels were also directed by Donner--became a model for action flicks that is still being referenced today.

Donner is currently prepping an adaptation of Michael Crichton's time-travel novel Timeline, which is tentatively scheduled to begin shooting in the spring.
