Named after Burt Reynolds' character "Quint" in Gunsmoke, Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born on March 27th, 1963 in Knoxville, Tennessee. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was 2 and, almost immediately, young Quentin was drawn to movies. His mother would take him to the cinema regularly and everything about the art delighted him. Tarantino educated via pop culture Instead of getting his film education at school like other aspiring actors/directors, Tarantino soaked it up directly from society and pop culture.
In 1985, he got a job as a store clerk at Video Archives, a video rental store in Manhattan Beach, California. His days were spent watching, discussing and recommending videos to customers with his friend and future director, Roger Avary. In his time off, Tarantino began writing scripts.
After writing and filming a very rough movie called My Best Friend's Birthday, he finished his first great screenplay, called True Romance, in 1990. He sold the script for $30,000 US and used the earnings to produce Reservoir Dogs on 16mm film, with his friends starring in the lead roles.
With this experience in his back pocket, Tarantino left the video store and went to work at CineTel, rewriting and editing scripts. Now that he had his foot in the door, Tarantino was able to shop around his projects. In fact, it's a little known fact that in 1990, Tarantino wrote a script for Natural Born Killers and then sold it off. Of course, Oliver Stone picked it up, tweaked it, and made it into his own raw hit. As a result of the changes, Tarantino received only a small writing credit in the film.
Quentin's Reservoir Dogs is a cult classic Through some connections, Tarantino got to know actor Harvey Keitel and showed him the rough draft for Reservoir Dogs. Keitel liked it so much that he used his clout to secure enough funding for a full-length motion picture version. With the ball now rolling, Tarantino got such actors as Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi and Michael Madsen to fill the other important roles alongside Keitel. Reservoir Dogs was released at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. Tarantino began traveling the world showing off his movie, which was slowly becoming an underground hit in Europe. In the U.S., the film did rather well but has shown much more success as a film and DVD rental in the decade since its release.
