Born in 1957 in Hamburg (Germany), Oliver Hirschbiegel studied to be painter. He began hi career as a Multi-Media artist, and his experimental films caught attention of German television executives.

He has been a major force in that industry since the mid 1980's, known for his compelling direction of detective dramas and thrillers. His detective series "Kommissar Rex" has been one of Germany's and Austria's biggest hits and is seen in more than 40 countries throughout the world.

In 2001 he directed "Das Experiment", a huge commercial and critical success. The film racked up numerous awards in Germany and abroad, uncluding the Bavarian Movie Award, Best Director at Montreal and the People's Choice Award at the Istanbul Film Festival.

Oliver Hirschbiegel lives in Vienna (Austria), with his wife and two children. "Downfall" was his third feature film.
