MARY BETH HURT has been nominated three times for Tony Awards as Best Actress: “Trelawney of the Wells” (1976), “Crimes of the Heart” (1982, also an Obie Award), and “Benefactors” (1986).  She recently appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s LADY IN THE WATER.  Born Mary Beth Supinger, she trained for the theater at New York University's School of the Arts. She then spent a year in London, where she performed with the Questers, a well-known amateur theater troupe.

In 1972, she made her professional debut with the New York Shakespeare Festival, and then went on to a very successful stage career on Broadway and elsewhere. She made her screen debut in 1978 in Woody Allen’s, Interiors (1978), and followed by starring in Joan Micklin Silver's Head Over Heels. Hurt has remained primarily a stage actress, but other films include THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, D.A.R.Y.L., COMPROMISING POSITIONS, PARENTS, SLAVES OF NEW YORK, MY BOYFRIEND’S BACK, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, BOYS LIFE 2, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, AUTUMN IN NEW YORK, THE FAMILY MAN, RED DRAGON, and THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE.  From 1972-82 she was married to actor William Hurt. She is now married to writer-director Paul Schrader, and co-starred in his films Light Sleeper and AFFLICTION.
