Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau was born as Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe on December 28, 1888 in Bielefeld, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.  He was one of the most influential directors of the silent film era.

Murnau's most famous film is "Nosferatu", a 1922 adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula" that caused Stoker's estate to sue for copyright infringement.

The director  lost the lawsuit and all prints of the film were ordered destroyed, but bootleg prints were stored and preserved over time.

F.W. Murnau died on the 11th of March 1931 in Santa Barbara, California, USA due to an automobile accident.
