Ed Lauter
Viewed, 4450x, Last Updated 2007-01-21 ED LAUTER has long established himself as a consummate actor of stage and screen, distinguished as “the greatest character actor” by such visionaries as Alfred Hitchcock. Appearing in over 150 films, over 30 television projects and awardwinning Broadway plays, Lauter prides himself on his professionalism and his dedication to the craft of acting. Born in Long Beach, Long Island to Broadway actress Sally Lee. After graduating from C.W. Post with a degree in acting and serving in the special services division of the U.S. Army, Lauter began performing as a stand-up comedian in Greenwich Village and was soon awarded the admiration of fellow comedian, the legendary Richard Pryor. After further acting study under Bill Hickey, he began working in commercials and soap operas, soon appearing in the award-winning play “The Great White Hope” on Broadway with James Earl Jones. His first film, “Dirty Little Billy” (1972) brought him to California. He has the distinction of working with Alfred Hitchcock on his last film “Family Plot” (1976). Among his other notable motion picture acting credits are “My Blue Heaven” (1990), “The Rocketeer” (1991), “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989), “True Romance” (1993), 20 “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995) and “Mulholland Drive” (2001). His television work includes the telefilms “The Migrants,” “The Jericho Mile,” “The Defiant Ones,” and “The Tuskegee Airmen” for HBO and a regular role on the Stephen King series “Golden Years.” Most recently, he starred in “Seabiscuit” (2003) and had a cameo appearance in “The Longest Yard,” (2005), the remake of the 1974 film in which he starred opposite Burt Reynolds. He also is starring with Will Farrell in “High Wide and Handsome” (which completed filming before his acting in “Seraphim Falls,” and also will be seen in the short comedy “Working for Harry” which won first place in the New Orleans Film Festival.
