David Ayer was born in the Midwest and moved to South Central, Los Angeles as a young teen. To escape the streets, he joined the United States Navy, where he served as a sonar man on a nuclear attack submarine. After an honorable discharge, Ayer left the military service and began the difficult writer's journey.

He recently wrote and co-produced the Academy Award-winning Training Day and Ron Shelton's crime drama Dark Blue. He is also credited on the hugely successful The Fast and the Furious and the World War II submarine saga U-571.
