Brad Anderson

Viewed, 2568x, Last Updated

Brad Anderson was bitten by the film bug as a boy in Madison, Connecticut, where he tooled around in grade school with his dad’s super-8 movie camera making three-minute film shorts with his friends. Later, as an undergrad at Bowdoin College, in Maine, he supplemented his studies in Russian and anthropology with classes in ethnographic film—movies that document other cultures. After graduating, in 1987, Anderson made his way to Martha’s Vineyard, where he drove a Wonder Bread truck for a living. Then one day he landed a job as projectionist for a classic independent film series called Rear Window, after the Hitchcock classic. The series was run by David Kleiler, who would become legendary in local film circles for saving the Coolidge Corner Theater from becoming a shopping arcade. Kleiler would pick Anderson up every week, and the two would talk film on the way to West Tisbury, where the series was screened. It was, as they say in the movies, the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

In 1988, Anderson left for England to put in a year at the London International Film School, where he learned the basics of filmmaking. He returned to the Boston area because his sister was here. From a small apartment in Somerville, he started working on movies in any capacity he could, mostly editing and directing. He made his own short films and documentaries on everything from bowling to schlock horror, and he helped others with their films. But neither pursuit was making him any money. Finally he got a job that incorporated both filmmaking and a livelihood at WGBH-TV, editing the PBS series The Americas and Making Sense of the Sixties.

In his spare time, Anderson plugged into Boston’s independent-music scene, which he says "cross-pollinates" with the independent-film scene. He even made a video for his sister’s boyfriend’s group, which called itself Carnal Garage. While shooting the video and hanging out with the band, Anderson became friends with the bass player, a guy named Lyn Vaus.

Later he went on to Sundance where he released his first movie Next Stop Wonderland to open arms. On the steam from his success he went on to direct Happy Accidents, Session 9, and The Machinist.
