Anthony Mackie

ANTHONY MACKIE is a classically trained actor who consistently brings intensity and intelligence to his work. Poised to become one of the foremost talents of his generation, Mackie recently starred in Half Nelson opposite Ryan Gosling. The independent film is a feature adaptation of Ryan Fleck’s Sundance-winning short film Gowanus, Brooklyn. The film follows a unique relationship between a white schoolteacher, his African-American student and a local drug dealer.

This year, Mackie appeared in Freedomland, the adaptation of Richard Price’s best-selling novel about the aftermath of a carjacking that becomes a racially charged media sensation. Directed by Joe Roth for Revolution, the film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Julianne Moore, Edie Falco and Ron Eldard. He then portrayed a street-smart basketball player in Preston Whitmore’s Crossover.

Upcoming for Mackie is Heavens Fall, opposite David Strathairn, Timothy Hutton and Leelee Sobieski. The film, which will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, is an independent feature based on the Scottsboro Boys’ trials, some of the most volatile court cases in American history.

On stage, Mackie most recently starred in Second Stage’s production of Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, A Soldier’s Play, opposite Taye Diggs, Steve Pasquale and James MacDaniel. The play, directed by Jo Bonney, is the story of a murder investigation on a Louisiana Army base during World War II -- the victim, a brutal, self-hating black soldier. He also recently starred in Stephen Belber’s Mcreele about a freed death-row inmate who runs for senate, at the Roundabout Theatre’s Off-Broadway house, The Laura Pels Theatre.

Mackie made an auspicious film debut as Eminem’s nemesis in Curtis Hanson’s 8 MILE. His performance caught the attention of Spike Lee, who subsequently cast Mackie in Sucker Free City and She Hate Me. He also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s multi-Academy Award®-winning Million dollar Baby opposite Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood, Jonathan Demme’s The Manchurian Candidate opposite Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber and The Man opposite Samuel L. Jackson. In addition, Mackie earned IFP Spirit and Gotham Award nominations for his performance in Eugene Levy and Rodney Evans’ Brother to Brother. The film also garnered the 2004 Special Dramatic Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and the award for Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Seven weeks prior to graduation from Juilliard, Mackie made his professional stage debut as Tupac Shakur in the hit off-Broadway production of Up Against the Wind. He first appeared on Broadway as the title character’s stuttering nephew Sylvester in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom with Whoopi Goldberg and Charles S. Dutton. Most recently, Mackie starred on Broadway opposite Alfre Woodard in Regina Taylor’s Drowning Crow. His New York stage credits also include Marion McClinton’s Talk, for which he won an Obie Award and at Juilliard’s, Blues for Mister Charlie, The Mahabharata and Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me. Studying with Group 30 from the prestigious Juilliard School of Drama, Mackie, a New Orleans native, currently resides in Manhattan.
