Andrzej Bartkowiak who was born in Lodz (Poland), and studied cinematography at the Lodz Film School. After he emigrated to the United States in 1972, he began his career as a cinematographerand worked for commercials and independent films.

From 1976 to 2000, he worked as cinematographer for many movies. He provided the visuals for various genres. Some movies he made as cinematographer are "Twins", "Falling Down", "Speed", Species", "Lethal Weapon 4", "The Devils Advocate" and "Thirteen Days".

After working for the directors, he moved to the directors chair himself. Bartkowiak began directing on Joel Silver productions. His first movie as a director was "Romeo must Die", starring Jet Li and Aaliyah. After finishing "Exit Wounds", he again worked together wit Jet Li for the movie  "Cradle 2  the Grave".

In September 2004 Andrzej Bartkowiak has been signed on to a 'pay-or-play' deal with Universal to direct the Sci-Fi Movie "Doom", based on the best selling id game, starring Karl Urban and Dwayne "The Rock"  Johnson.
