It’s been a wild couple of months for comic book movie news. From Paul Rudd in Marvel’s “Ant-Man” to DC Justice League speculation and then back around to “Ant-Man” again with their casting of Michael Douglas. And in the midst of all those breaking stories, there’s still one more that may or may pan out.
This is Infamous is reporting that they have the exclusive casting news that Jon Hamm has been approached to play Dr. Strange. This comes right after a Latino Review story that claimed Johnny Depp was being considered for the role. So who is playing the mystical surgeon? Your guess is as good as mine.
You might be asking: “Why run the story if you aren’t sure what to believe?” Because, I think this serves as an excellent teachable moment. From what I can gather, it would seem that Jon Hamm, Johnny Depp, and a number of other fine actors are up for consideration for the Doctor Strange role. At any given moment, an actor could be on the verge of accepting the role, but then complications like scheduling conflicts or contract negotiations can stall the process.
It’s very possible that three days ago Johnny Depp was about to put pen to paper and sign up for Doctor Strange only to have to back out because of something like a commitment to “Pirates of the Caribbean.” It’s also very possible that Jon Hamm is the favorite to play to the Doctor now, but some executive could always squash that idea before it’s finalized.
Until the ink dries on the paper and you see an actor standing next to Mickey Mouse with a suitcase full of money, I recommend being cautious of any casting news. For now, this will have to be a “wait and see” situation. However, if Jon Hamm lands the role, I’d be thrilled. What say you reader?
