Another year of being insanely jealous of SXSW Film Festival attendees is ahead of me. This year the festival is collecting another slew of hotly anticipated horror titles which also includes the debut of the EVIL DEAD remake. If that wasn’t enough then the hits just keep on coming with the titles announced the Midnight premieres that feature a couple of my most anticipated upcoming horror features.
Showing during the Midnight Madness will be titles such as BIG ASS SPIDER, THE RAMBLER, CHEAP THRILLS, HAUNTER, THE KISS OF THE DAMNED AND PLUS ONE. The ones that I am particularly interested in keeping an eye out for- not that the other titles don’t have my attention- are Rob Zombie’s THE LORDS OF SALEM, V/H/S/2 (Formerly S-VHS) and YOU’RE NEXT. The latter title made my most anticipated list of 2012 back when no one had a clue when the film was going to see a release from Lionsgate and then late in the year announced an August 2103 date.
THE LORDS OF SALEM is Zombie’s first film since the widely panned HALLOWEEN 2 which had it’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year to a bit of mixed praise. I have enjoyed Zombie’s previous releases and even thought HALLOWEEN 2 was okay when I first watched it, but that tepid praise didn’t hold up on multiple viewings. As an original story from Zombie’s brain I have at that THE LORDS OF SALEM will be more along the lines of THE DEVIL’S REJECTS.
Lastly, of the titles I’m excited for is the sequel to last year’s horror anthology V/H/S, V/H/S/2. All of that is a lot more annoying to type than it was as its previous title S-VHS, but regardless the newest anthology made its debut at Sundance in January and was widely praised as an enormous improvement on the first. That is a hefty amount of hype for me as I really enjoyed the first more than a lot of people seemed to on its release on VOD in August and subsequent DVD release. You can check out the teaser trailer and get a good tease at the insanity that lies within.
Well that rounds out the titles playing at this years SXSW Film Festival. My vision might be narrow as I usually focus more on the horror/thrillers coming out of the festival than I do anything else. Feel free to share anything you are looking forward to seeing.
