A few days ago the poster for J.J. Abrams STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS hit the web to a lot of the same chatter about the Hollywood-ized regurgitation due to the over utilization of a person standing around destruction that happens to be in the shape of the movie’s logo- I happen to like it despite that. Now the first teaser for the film has made its way online and it too has been met with a collective gasp of “oh goodness it’s too dark” and “how come it’s not fun anymore?” All I have to say is the abundance of internet crybabies getting their panties in a bunch only make me more excited for this.
I love the first film- I love its spirit and I love how fun it is. I also love this trailer and I find it more than a little presumptuous to make any kind of declaration or even express fear that Abrams and company have lost what made the first film so great. Even if its not AS fun, who cares? Why does every movie have to follow the structure and feel of the first? Don’t we as movie fans often complain about how sequels don’t differentiate themselves from the first and condemn the filmmakers for not taking enough chances? Here it looks as if they are going to try and take the material more seriously, but we have no idea to what extent. The first film was not without its heavy moments and its important to take into consideration that this is a teaser, its barely a minute long and was designed only to get you excited that the film is coming. Once we see a full trailer it’s possible to get a better idea of the overall feel, but the only way to know for sure is to wait to see the film in its entirety.
I’m off my soapbox. What do YOU think of the first teaser for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS?
