The first trailer for LINCOLN has surfaced, which comes to us from director Steven Speilberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. The film obviously follows the exploits of one of our country’s finest presidents at the end of the civil war as he attempts to abolish slavery.
The trailer itself is pretty great, mostly because I think Daniel Day-Lewis is already well on his way to more awards season buzz for this role based even on pieces of his performance in this footage alone. If I had to put forth any complaint for this it would be the music, which is suitably dramatic and time period fitting while also sounding quite patriotic, but in my opinion it’s also a little over the top and feels like the marketing is trying a little too hard to fit that “Oscar bait” template- only thing missing is Honest Abe swinging an axe at glassy eyed vampires.
LINCOLN also features roles from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Earl Haley, James Spader and John Hawkes and based on a screenplay by Tony Kushner. The script was also adapted from the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearn Goodwin. Expect to see LINCOLN in theaters November 16, 2012.
