MARVEL just sent us over the poster for Captain America 2: Winter Soldier and along with it we also have a bunch of details on the upcoming sequel. Let’s start off with the most important Captain America 2 Movie detail which is when you can all see it. MARVEL announced that it will be released in theaters on April 4th 2014 so we have a bit of a wait on our hands.
Captain America 2 takes place after The Avengers movie which is somewhat obvious since he was frozen in a big block of ice and not exactly able to do much before The Avengers movie and the first Captain America film covered his origins.
We do not have any clear indication on the plot for the Captain America movie but based on the movie’s title it will focus on the story of The Winter Soldier which means that we have room for a third film. I am not going to get into a lot of detail but it is likely MARVEL will introduce a new hero in Captain America 2 and then complete the arc in Captain America 3 and it could be a truly fantastic arc at that!
We also know thanks to Collider that in the sequel Captain America is still in SHIELD which means that we might also see Samuel L Jackson in the sequel.
Captain America 2 may also feature a side kick which again plays into my comments above about 2 more Captain America movies. The Huffington Post asked producer Kevin Feige a loaded question that they clearly knew the answer to asking if Captain America would have sidekick and the producer had a hard time skirting the question and in my mind pretty much admitted he would saying;
“It is interesting that you ask that question. And I’m not going to give you an answer. But I will give you kudos for pointing that out and recognizing that.”
In a little bit of a history note Captain America’s sidekick was James Bucky Barnes who took over from Captain America when he was assassinated in Captain America vol. 5, #25 (March 2007). I am going to skip over a lot of details on his sidekick and the whole assassination bit as it could potentially result in some massive comic book and potential movie spoilers.
The question that the Huffington Post posed was as noted a loaded question and they clearly know that the name of the film is no coincidence. The Winter Soldier is not some catchy slogan that Marvel came up with it is actually a key story in the Captain America story and if you want to read the details do so here but be warned massive spoilers on what the Captain America sequel will be about.
Kevin Feige also made some interesting comments to SuperheroHype about the film and how it will have some Batman comparisons. Christophe Nolan’s The Dark Knight film trilogy has focused alot on the angst of the man and it sounds like the Captain America 2: Winter Soldier movie will focus as much on the character and his difficulties integrating into modern America as it will about the action.
Are you excited for Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier? Do you think the name has ties to the comic books or are we all just grasping? Sound off in the comments
