I have read alot of wierd things over the years and the news around The Walking Dead Season 3 and the casting of the Governor really does take the cake. You should all know by now that British actor David Morrisey will be playing the role of The Governor but I bet you did not know that John Hawkes the incredibly talented actor from Dead Wood passed on the role.
Not only is John a great actor but he also has the perfect look to play the diabolical Governor. What really blows my mind is that he did not pass on it because he had other projects on going, or could not come to a salary agreement. He told MovieWeb in a recent interview it was because of commercials… yep TV ads made him pass on the role.
From MovieWeb John Hawkes is quoted as saying;
“They offered me the role, and I just felt there would be someone else who could do it better. I was flattered, and I took a look at the series. It held interest for me, but I just didn’t feel like I was the guy for it. I have to be careful of what TV shows I choose, particularly ones that have commercials in them, because it’s going to be a different kind of television show. There are going to be sponsors.
No matter how good the show is, if there are commercials, it’s going to be a different show, to me. That’s just my personal feeling. Yeah, it was nice of them to ask, and it’s a good show, but, again, I just didn’t feel I was the guy. They came to me and sent me the graphic novel and the first two seasons. I took a look at them, and just didn’t feel like it was for me.”
Considering how many of us struggle day to day just to make ends meet ( especially those of us who write on the internet for pennies a day ) It boggles my mind that Mr Hawkes would pass on a lucractive role simply because AMC’s The Walking Dead has commercials in it.
I think I can say without hesitation that if any one of us had been offered the role of The Governor or for that matter ANY role in The third season of The Walking Dead we would have jumped at it. I am not sure if Mr Hawkes has some unique outlook or social views on commercials but I for one do not get it.
What do you think of this news? Can you think of an important reason that commercials would lead an actor to pass on a project? I am all for actors who are passionate about their work but this one really boggles me.
