Cabin In The Woods Review

The Cabin in the Woods had been in development hell for the past few years until being picked up by Lionsgate for wide release. Every horror movie fan who saw the trailer had a heart attack after seeing the bird flying and exploding once hitting the invisible force field. From seeing that, we knew that this was going to be a horror movie made for horror movie fans. After months of anticipation, I finally had the chance to see the film in all it’s glory. Hate me for saying this but it was good. Not great.

Synopsis: Five college friends great ready for a weekend of sex, drugs and rock and roll and their friends family cabin house only to be terrorized by zombie rednecks. Oh yeah and there is something very important that hidden underneath the house.

Now I am not going to go fully into the story yet because I know some folks have not seen it yet and I do not want to spoil the story. Now here is the good stuff about the movie. The story in the beginning is pretty damn awesome. It takes the typical horror movie genre of the friends going into the woods and turns it completely upside down and smacks it across the face a few times.

You have the dumb asshole jock who is actually intelligent and nice, the brunette virgin who is actually the smut of the group, the blonde who is also sweet and smart, the stoner who see’s it all coming, and the token ‘black” character who is not really the typical ethnic character. Once at the house they read a Latin quote from a diary that unleashes zombie rednecks on the students. Nothing new but that’s the whole point of the movie!! Soon the characters change stereotypes. The jock becomes an asshole, the blonde turns into the smut, the smut brunette turns into the virgin girl, the stoner becomes smart and the stereotypical “black” character does not die first.  Cabin in the Woods is smart with this because it is making fun of the genre and taking it to a whole new level.

Now you have seen the trailers and commercials and saw the people in the lab coats. Yes now I am not going to fully explain because it is key to the story but this particular part of the film is exceptional with some over the top effects and great “battle” scene.

As the ending drew closer I was excited to find out what it all was behind The Cabin in the Woods. Provided with a great cameo, I was ready for the story and an awesome ending. Let’s just say I felt cheated and wanted my money back. The ending to the film ruined the movie for me. I thought it was one of the most absurd, dumb and pointless endings I have seen in a horror film in a while. Now If you have not seen the film I still advise you to go out and see it because many people loved and adored the ending. I just was not one of those fans.

The Cabin in the Woods is goofy horror with a unique story line that has one of the most ridiculous endings (and I do not mean that in a good way) that I have seen in a long time.

2 and a half out of 4 stars.

sorry, but this film flew right past me, didn’t enjoy it at all, i expected a more classic ‘horror’ movie approach. I know it’s been receiving rave reviews from many quarters but I guess i’m not as intellectually blessed as some of those who viewed the movie favourably and saw it’s particular plot as some kind of a path breaker in this genre

Never thought I would love this movie!! I love the cliche, the comedy, the twist, and most importantly the unexpected ending, it’s about f’ing time a movie ends like this one…Loved it!
