Every once in a while, I see a movie trailer that blows my mind and gets me all sorts of excited. Four films have done this to me in my life time. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tim Burton’s newest dip into the vampire genre , Dark Shadows.
Synopsis: In 1752, the Collins family sails from Liverpool, England to North America. The son, Barnabas, grows up to be a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine and is the master of Collinwood Manor. He breaks the heart of a witch, Angelique Bouchard, who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. In 1972, Barnabas is accidentally freed from his coffin and returns to find his once-magnificent manor in ruin. It is occupied by dysfunctional Collins descendants and other residents, all of whom have secrets.
The film is based of the famous soap opera Dark Shadows that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. If you have not watched the original series I suggest you check it out. It is extremely entertaining and fun to watch. It is amazing to see how much of a cult phenomenon it became and how it is still talked about today by many horror and non horror fans alike.
When word broke out that Tim Burton was going to direct of remake of the show, I was ecstatic. New pictures were starting to be released on the internet that looked wondrous and pure Burton. When I finally watch the premiere for the trailer yesterday, I will not lie by saying it was not what I was expecting at all.
My first thought that came to mind was he would be giving us another Sleepy Hollow/Sweeney Todd type film that would be pure Gothic horror and terror. When I heard the famous 70’s music start to play, my jaw dropped and had the biggest smile on my face. Burton sure has made it his typical horror film, but has thrown in the complete 70’s vibe with it. I know all of us Dark Shadows fans are going to embrace this movie with pure love.
Dark Shadows hits theaters and IMAX screens May 11th, 2012
