Back in 2008, Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, III, IV, Mother’s Day) and Terrance Zdunich brought us the highly anticipated Repo! The Genetic Opera, a rock opera about organ repossession in the not-so-distant future. The film went on to become a cult phenomenon and has been called The Rocky Horror Picture Show of our generation. Now for 2012, Darren and Terrance invite us on a to a trip to the darkest depths of hell to see the greatest show on earth. The Devil’s Carnival.
Synopsis: Sinners are invited to a theme park where they endure the repetition of their transgressions. Lucifer and his colorful cast of singing carnies guide these lost souls through their wild, warped amusement park.
I never heard of this film before until recently. I was just browsing and came across the trailer and thought I’d give it a shot. When I saw Darren and Terrance’s names pop up, it was like somebody took my heart out of my chest, pumped it full of adrenaline, and shoved it back in my body. I was almost jumping for joy. Repo! The Genetic Opera is one of my favorite movies of all time. It brought something new to the musical and turned it into an experience unlike anything I had ever saw before. Now they are ready to give us their next greatest achievement with The Devil’s Carnival
The film stars Sean Patrick Flannery (Boondock Saints), Terrance Zdunich (Repo!), Alexa Vega (Repo!, Spy Kids), Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas, Repo!) and Briana Evigan (Step Up 2, Sorority Row).
This is actually were all the fun starts. Devil’s Carnival is not a full length feature film. It’s only 55 minutes long and is stated to the “Episode One” on the theatrical poster. It is a musical that features 12 original songs written by Zdunich himself. For all we know, this could possible turn into a Tales from the Crypt type series, or it could just be the start of a full length film. This is why I find this so exciting because I’m not even sure the direction they are taking this film in terms of what they are trying to do with it. If it turns out to be either a full length feature or a series of episodes, I will be happy with the end result.
Think you might like to see the film? Well you will have the chance too. Just like they did with Repo, The Devil’s Carnival will be making it’s way across the country for a Road Tour. Bousman and Zdunich will be tagging along for they will be stopping at various cities starting in April to do a special showing of the film. Events such as costume contests, live burlesque shows, screenings of never before behind the scenes footage from Repo! The Genetic Opera, and Q&A sessions. There are three types of tickets you can get as well. Sinner (Admission to film), Carnie (Admission and Pre-Signed Poster) and Ringmaster (Admission, Poster, and a meet and great with the cast and crew). How cool is that?!?
