If you’re looking for a lean week in regards to movie watching, then July 5th is the week for it. Skimming the list of DVD releases I could only find one of note, two if I include one that I doubt a lot of people have heard of. If that one release hadn’t been something I’d had the chance to see then this week might have been quite the bust. Nevertheless, there was at least one notable release and just to beef the post up a little I chime in on the other release worth giving a shout out.
Hobo With A Shotgun
Woo wee! What an ugly little film this was. Shot with the look and feel of Grindhouse cinema, HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN does exactly what it intends to do and makes no apologies for it. The comment of ugly is both praise and a slight against it; the gritty and dark nature of the film is both a high point and what more or less made the film unravel. In the end I wasn’t blown away by HOBO, but I did have quite a bit of fun with it. Verdict: Rent It
A pretty high profile release for any fan of Takashi Miike, but for anyone unfamiliar I don’t know if 13 ASSASSINS even registers as a blip on their radar. Miike has delivered such extreme gore classics as AUDITION and ICHI THE KILLER and now he comes on with this action thriller about 13 Samurai who go head to head with a wave of soldiers in order to prevent war. I’ve been aware of the film myself, but have not had a chance to check it out, rest assured though, I will. Since I haven’t seen it though, can’t get to crazy with my recommendation. Verdict: Rent It
Noteworthy DVD/Blu-Ray releases for the week of July 12, 2011: Arthur, Insidious, The Lincoln Lawyer, Rango and more.
