Where Lionsgate was once the premier brand for horror Anchorbay Entertainment is trying extremely hard to steal that throne with the release of the remake of I Spit On Your Grave. Lionsgate still makes great films but they are no longer the only player in the horror genre and with Fox Atomic a distant memory its now up to Anchorbay to fulfill what horror fans want, great quality horror films! Anchorbay’s latest film ‘I Spit on Your Grave’ is easily the most violent and controversial movie released by American distributors since the remake of Last House on the Left hit theatres and its also a film that intelligent and hardended horror fans who love the classics will truly appreciate since frankly you cant really “enjoy” a movie with this sort of subject matter but you can be moved by it.
A remake of the controversial 1979 cult classis, I Spit on Your Grave retells the horrific tale of writer Jennifer Hills, who takes a retreat from the city to a charming cabin in the woods to start on her next book. But Jennifer’s presence in the small town attracts the attention of a few morally deprived locals who set out one night to teach this city girl a lesson.
They break into her cabin to scare her. However, what starts out as terrifying acts of humiliation and intimidation, quickly and uncontrollably escalates into a night of physical abuse and torturous assault. But before they can kill her, Jennifer sacrifices her broken and beaten body to a raging river that washes her away.
As time passes, the men slowly stop searching for her body and try to go back to life as usual. But that isn’t about to happen. Against all odds, Jennifer Hills survived her ordeal. Now, with hell bent vengeance, Jennifer’s sole purpose is to turn the tables on these animals and to inflict upon them every horrifying and torturous moment they carried out on her… only much, much worse.
I Spit on Your Grave is a sick and violent movie which depicts violence against women in the most vicious kind of way. It features graphic scenes of rape, torture and humiliation and by the mainstream press definition it is without a doubt torture porn. Much like the 1979 original this is a violent tale of violation, merciless cruelty and revenge all with a strong feminist angle. Sarah Butler who is a relative unknown delivers a powerful performance as Jennifer Hill and is able to really throw herself into a role that must be incredibly hard for any actress to portray. Backed up with a strong cast of co-stars I Spit On Your Grave is an unrelenting and violent affair that will not give you any resolution, will turn your stomach and make you cheer as Jennifer goes on a murderous spree of revenge… at least until you begin asking yourself… when does it end? When is enough enough when it comes to revenge?
A great film with strong performances I Spit On Your Grave will pull you into its dark and depraved world of revenge and volence but clearly is not for everyone. A violent and sadistic movie with an underlying feminist message true blue horror fans will love it but mainstream horror fans will very likely be turned off by its very dark and very brutal visuals. Not as powerful or as well developed as the French horror MARTYRS or the indie horror DEAD GIRL but still I Spit On Your Grave is a powerful experience and one that will leave its deviant and sadistic mark on you. A must see for those who can handle a subject matter that is as taboo as it is disturbing with a truly fresh twist on ‘revenge’
