8 Apocalyptic Weather Movies To Watch This Snow Day!

Right now a massive snow event is happening across large sections of the United States and Canada. In some areas it is incredibly dangerous to even be on the roads so depending on where you live you may want to opt out of work and stay home and checkout a movie or two. What better way to make yourself feel better about ‘a little snow’ then to watch a couple flicks about Apocalyptic Weather Events. Below are 8 films all revolving around apocalyptic weather events to make this snow day pass faster.

The Day after Tomorrow: Directed by Roland Emerich this apocalyptic snow movie stars Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal. Quaid plays a climatologist who tries to figure out a way to save the world from abrupt global warming. He must get to his young son in New York played by Jake, which is being taken over by a new ice age.

The Perfect Storm: George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and the absolutely stunning Diane Lane star in this film about an unusually intense storm pattern that catches some commercial fishermen unaware and puts them in mortal danger.

Volcano: Anyone have any idea what Anne Heche is up to these days? Last thing I remember her being in the news for was leaving her husband and dating Ellen and that was a long time ago! Anyrate Anne and Tommy Lee Jones star in this film about a volcano that erupts in downtown LA and threatens to destroy the entire city. This one will warm you up a bit from the cold outside.

Twister: Starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton and Carey Elwes this film is about divorcing researchers who throw themselves into the destructive path of a Twister for their research. An interesting analogy since not only is the weather a twister but so is their relationship.

Deep Impact: Deep Impact tops this list as one of the most thought provoking and heart felt without question. Its the story of a comet on a collision course with earth and how people come to terms with their chances of survival and their impending destruction. Starring Elijah Wood, Tea Leoni, Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall this is a really smart film that will really move you

Armageddon: Armaggedon is the Michael Bay version of Deep Impact starring Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton and Bruce Willis. This two is about space debris on a collision course with earth but in this case it revolves around some rough neck drillers who are turned into astronauts and sent into space to ‘drill the meteors’ and blow them up. True to form it has astronauts packing heat in space, strippers, lots of insane action and stuff blowing up. This one is a favourite of mine as well but for different reasons then Deep Impact. Armageddon is just fun and entertaining!

Poseidon: The original came out in 1972 and starred Gene Hackman. A remake was done in 2006 starring Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss. On New Year’s Eve, the luxury ocean liner, Poseidon, capsizes after being swamped by a rogue wave. The survivors are left to fight for survival as they attempt to escape the sinking ship.

The Happening: This one is the biggest stretch of the entire bunch since it features a very odd scifi angle but in M Night Shyamalans ‘The Happening’ mother nature turns against mankind in a vicious kind of way. Not a great film but not a bad film either it just reminds me how at one time M Night was a legendary filmmaker and is now relegated to churning out crap like The Last Airbender. The Happening offers a really unique mother nature angle on apocalyptic weather events and features a great cast. Not M Night Shyamalan’s best work but definitely not his worst!

  1. This is so nice! I always loved the The Day After Tomorrow film. The Happening is also one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for reminding me about these great films.

Ok then, I’ll have to shamelessly plug my post-apo sci-fi comedy feature film entitled “Hellacious Acres : The Case of John Glass” (2011). Trailers and info at
