The suits at Paramount Studios look like they have done the entire movie going public a favor. According to the LA Times, they have decided to not bring Stephen Sommers back to direct the sequel to the amazingly bad “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. In fact, if every movie studio would get behind the idea of not hiring Sommers, the movies would be a much safer place.
If I was to make a list of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in the theater, “G.I. Joe” is definitely in the mix. It’s just terrible. Not surprisingly, another Sommers flick, “Van Helsing”, gets in there as well. I’ve seen brief moments of the first “Mummy” movie and it was painfully bad. I don’t even care for the special effects he uses as everything looks rubbery. In case you aren’t picking up on it, I am dead set not a fan of the guy.
The good news about this Yo Joe! sequel is that Paramount made a smart move and hired “Zombieland” writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick to script this one. Of course, you could hand over a David Mamet script to Sommers and he’d find a way to trash it.
Now, if they’d only be rid of Marlon Wayans, they would finally be onto something.
