It was announced yesterday that Judd Apatow’s next movie will be some sort of spin-off of “Knocked Up”. However, it will not star the characters portrayed by Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl. Instead, it will star Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann’s married couple Pete and Debbie. It’s a clever and very safe move as there’s no doubt that the two of them almost steal the movie right out from under everyone.
There’s no confirmation of it, but it’s safe to bet that the regular cast of Apatow characters (Rogen, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Martin Starr, etc.) will somehow, someway show up in this one. Is there no doubt that Apatow’s daughters will reprise their roles as Pete and Debbie’s kids? There shouldn’t be.
As a big Paul Rudd fan, I’m excited to see him back in an Apatow movie. In fact, I don’t think I repeat any movie lines more than I do from Rudd’s character in “Knocked Up”. If there were any justice in this world and the Academy Awards actually recognized comedic performances, Rudd and Mann should have gotten Best Supporting Actor/Actress consideration. That’s just how great I think they are in that movie. If you can’t see the genius in Leslie Mann’s doorman scene and the picture perfect delivery that Rudd gives during the dinner scene, well, then you don’t know funny.
Also, this movie will make a bazillion dollars. Kind of like “Funny People” should have done. That is a movie that gets better and better every time I see it.
