The Walking Dead tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country.

Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive. Update: Read our Walking Dead Episode 4 Review

I’m seeing a SOAP OPERA here. Time to break out the zombies and have a little SURVIVAL going on. BORING!! Better premise: the lone cop searches for his family, encounters others along the way. Kinda like The Fugitive. Nothing’s permanent, nothing lasts – but HOPE.

The only monster to suspend our disbelief in the modern era is the ZoMbIe. No true scientist- given our current knowledge of the complexity of biological systems- could say for sure zombies are not -at least-plausible. That said, I believe the success and serious ass-kicking drama in the show demonstrates a scary foreshadow to our current world view. Just as King Kong spoke to the depression, and foreshadowed the “beast in modern man”: WWII, the holocaust, nuclear weapons…, the zombie has come to replace our old monsters. To me, this spells out another coming tragedy for humanity- if each of us continues on current path of personal gain at the expense of the greater good, then The Walking Dead may be a sociological wake up call (like Dracula, Frankenstein and the monsters of old were.) The depression gave us Kong. But Now…..WE ARE THE ZOMBIES!!!!! We rough beasts slouch towards a dark dawn, to devour the world.
Or maybe I just LOVE the show, and am really High right now…… Brains!!!!!!
