Hobo with a Shotgun was originally a trailer made for a Grindhouse trailer contest held by Robert Rodriguez at South by Southwest and used as a fake trailer in a few Canadian screenings of Grindhouse. Someone, who should be knighted and canonized, decided Hobo with a Shotgun should be a real movie. I do not yet think this is a bad idea.
As you can see, it stars Roy Batty himself, Rutger Hauer, as a hobo. With a shotgun. Thankfully, he’s on our side as a vigilante who hates crime. Besides the obvious things to love about the trailer, I love its ominous, delightfully ’80s music. It makes me think I’m watching Maniac Cop or something equally awesome.
Now there’s a poster out, and it’s as expectedly Grindhouse. Which I think is misleading, because, if the trailer is any indication, Hobo with a Shotgun demands something more stark and characteristically 1980s. At the risk of repeating myself, go look at the poster for Maniac Cop. Or how about Cobra?
