New on DVD and Blu-Ray November 2nd: Toy Story 3, The Pacific, The Goonies And More!

Hello folks! A little later than usual this week, but it’s time for me to have a look at what’s out on DVD and Blu-ray and try to guide you lovely people through the latest releases. I’ll tell you what’s out and whether I think it’s worth buying, renting or altogether avoiding as well as providing you with a peek at the bonus features each disc holds.

On to the discs!

Toy Story 3

One of my favourite films of this or any other year, Toy Story 3 is an outstanding conclusion to one of the best movie trilogies of all time. In fact, I’d go as far to say that the Toy Story series is my favourite trilogy ever. That being said, you can probably assume that I’d recommend you buy this one. And you’d be spot on. As much as I like How To Train Your Dragon, if this doesn’t win Best Animated Feature at next year’s Oscars, I’ll be stunned.

The Pacific

Not a movie this one, but it’s still a pretty big release. The Pacific is a 10-part mini-series that originally aired on HBO (hint: blood, guts and swearing) set in World War II. I haven’t seen it yet (or it’s predecessor Band of Brothers) but the fact that it’s the brainchild of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is good enough for me. Rent Band of Brothers first, and then this.

The Goonies (Ultimate Collector’s Edition)

You love it. I love it. Everyone loves The Goonies and now it’s hitting shelves on Blu-ray in an Ultimate Collector’s Edition — which, amazingly, has a board game. If you were a child of the 80’s, you’ll likely already have this on pre-order. If not, I’d heartily recommend picking this up. All together now: “HEYYYY YOUUUU GUUUYYYYYSSSS!”

  • Board game
  • Collectible storyboard prints
  • 1985 souvenir magazine with behind-the-scenes stories about filming in Astoria, Oregon
  • Reprint of a 2009 article with updates of the entire cast, as well as producer Steven Spielberg and director Richard Donner.

The Sound Of Music

Another classic wings its way to Blu-ray this week with the release of The Sound of Music. Those sweeping European mountain-scapes will look amazing in the hi-def format, so buy this one if you can and sit all the family round your entertainment centre to sing along.

  • Commentary with Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and director Robert Wise
  • Your Favorite Things: An Interactive Celebration
  • Music Machine Sing-Along
  • Musical Stages: Creating The Sound of Music
  • A City of Song
  • Vintage Rodgers & Hammerstein and The Sound of Music programs
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein: The Sound of American Music
  • Screen tests, rare treasures, interviews, photo galleries and more

If you pick up the Limited Collector’s set, you’ll also be able to enjoy:

  • 45th Anniversary soundtrack
  • 100-page ‘My Favorite Things’ scrapbook
  • Snapshots from Salzburg
  • Reproduction of the original 1965 souvenir program
  • Exclusive ‘My Favorite Things’ music box with letter of authenticity

I’m a big fan of Neil Marshall’s  previous work, especially The Descent, but I haven’t been able to catch his latest film as yet. That said, the awesome cast (Michael Fassbender, Dominic West and Noel Clarke) makes this historical actioner a solid rental option.
