Mark Wahlberg To Star In Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

Mark Wahlberg To Star In Uncharted: Drakes FortuneNathan Fillion fans, I’m sorry to report that your man won’t be playing lookalike Nathan Drake in the upcoming adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune as the role has gone to Mark Wahlberg.

The actor confirmed the news in an interview with MTV, stating that: “David is one of the best writer/directors I’ve ever worked with. The idea that he has is just insane. So hopefully we’ll be making that movie this summer.

While this seems to be a good decision on the surface — Wahlberg is after all an Academy Award nominee — I’m not so sure that he is the best fit for the role. The dude always seems to play the uptight straight man and Drake, for me, is more of a laid-back, plain old fun type of guy.

I’m a massive fan of the Uncharted games and this is one I’m really looking forward to. I just hope they pull it off as it should be done. Hell, the first game could practically be used as a storyboard for an outstanding action-adventure flick, but it seems that director David O Russell is moving slightly away from the plot of the games as he is rumoured to be casting Robert de Niro and Joe Pesci to play Drake’s father and uncle respecively — two characters who have never appeared in the games.

Wahlberg added: “I’m obviously in whatever David wants to do but the idea of it is so off the charts: De Niro being my father, Pesci being my uncle. It’s not going to be the watered-down version, that’s for sure.”

I have to admit I’m a bit disappointed as I thought Fillion would be a much better fit as Drake and the dude deserves his chance at the big time. However, fingers crossed this will work out, as Uncharted has the potential to be a massive hit.

What do you think?

All of the potential seems to have been thrown out the window when they chose David Russell to direct… From giving a potential franchise hit to Wahlberg who is one of the worst choices for Drake just because they’ve worked together and are friends, to making ridiculous alterations to an awesome script…. Plain dumb! I wouldn’t hold my breath for a good result…

      Thanks for your comment, Diana.

It’s neither the director nor star I would have picked (they’d have been lucky to make my top 50 choices), but I’m an optimist at heart and still have hope that they can pull a strong movie from such terrific source material. The game’s so good and Hollywood-friendly that all they had to do was copy the script (and maybe trim it down a bit).

They can’t possibly mess it up though, can they?
