Employee of the Month Movie Review

Employee of the Month Movie ReviewRight off the bat this is not the lame romantic comeyd starring Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson! So read no further if you think this review is about that Hollywood slosh. This review is about the dark crime-comedy that really rolled under my radar up until today.

Dark comedies are without a doubt one of my favourite genres of film. Where mainstream comedies are carefully designed to cater safely to mainstream audiences dark comedies throw that all into the wind and are not only not afraid to cross lines but take great pride in making you laugh and shocking you all in the same breath. Employee of the Month is a dark, funny and gruesome look at banker David and his life as it quickly unravels and is definitely a well wasted 90minutes of my life.

After congenital loser David (Matt Dillon) is fired from his high-paying bank job and his beautiful fiancée (Christina Applegate) calls off their wedding on the same miserable day, his luck impossibly goes from bad to worse when he inadvertently becomes involved in a robbery. Steve Zahn takes a show-stealing turn as David’s ne’er-do-well best friend in this entertaining dark comedy from director Mitch Rouse.

Employee Of The Month has a bit of  a slow start but once it finds its feet it is a non stop chuckle fest with more twists and screwball laughs then you can throw a money clip at. Throughout the film I kept being reminded of one of the greatest dark comedies ever made One Night at McCools and that in itself is a testament to how fun and entertaining Employee of the Month is.

Not a huge fan of Christina Applegates but she delivers in spades in this film and her chemistry with Matt Dillon is spot on. Steve Zahn proves once again that he is a staple of Hollywood as the ‘buddy character’ and delivers plenty of laughs and lots of head shaking as Mitch Rouse. Think of him as the poor man’s version of Zach Galifianakis. Just as funny but not quite as well known or respected for his comedic timing.

Employee of the Month is by no means an award winning movie but it has enough funny moments, shocing twists and dark characters to make it well worth watching for any fan of One Night At McCool’s or Very Bad Things. If you like me have the Netflix Video on Demand Service for Xbox you can watch Employee of the Month and One Night at McCool’s if you have not seen them. I am not sure if Very bad Things is on Netflix on Demand in Canada but if it is check it out as well. All 3 films will entertain you to no end and would be a great way to spend a few hours of your day!

  1. You actually make it appear so easy together with your presentation but I in finding this topic to be really one thing which I feel I’d by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and extremely wide for me. I’m taking a look forward for your next post, I’ll attempt to get the hang of it!
