I have never been a fan of Jessica Alba’s or Kate Hudson’s. Both to me are mediocre actors who are pigeon holed into the same roles in every movie they do. Jessica Alba will always be the hot chick and Kate Hudson will also be the romantic, or so I thought. Both of these young actresses co-star in the dark and highly disturbing thriller The Killer Inside Me which is both dark and sadistic and a real role changer for both of these actresses. They both play against type but unfortunately only one of them pulls it off.
THE KILLER INSIDE ME tells the story of handsome, charming, unassuming small town sheriff’s deputy named Lou Ford (Casey Affleck). The film takes place in an idyllic West Texas town in the early 1950’s. As a lifelong resident, Ford has difficulty juggling his long-term girlfriend Amy (Kate Hudson), the prostitute named Joyce (Jessica Alba) that he mistakenly falls for, and the sociopathic tendencies inside him. In Thompson’s savage, bleak, blacker than noir universe nothing is ever what it seems.
The Killer Inside me is the definition of a thriller that could have been genius but instead fell incredibly short. Every now and then you get a thriller that really moves you, films like Adam Greens SPIRAL. And every now and then you get a movie that misses the mark so badly that it makes you stomp your feet in anger. The Killer Inside me is a fantastic premise that is botched severely and results in one of the worst cases of ‘it could have been great’.
Throughout the movie there are tons of twists and turns that could have had you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next moment but unfortunately the film is so poorly executed that the entire thing is frankly a debacle. A mix of fantastic characters including a local sherriff with a dark secret The Killer Inside me just oozed potential but for whatever reason the cast and crew were not able to pull it together and its no surprise this was a direct to dvd release. Considering the violent context of the film mixed with the poor compilation of the film no studio in their right mind would release this into theatres.
Casey Affleck as always proves he is a fantastic actor and for me is one of the best young character actors in Hollywood. Kate Hudson even shocks me in a role that she delivers well with some very hard hitting scenes which she executed perfectly. Kate Hudson has so much more potential than we have seen in her recent string of forgettable romantic comedies.
Jessica Alba much like Kate Hudson plays against type but unfortunately as interesting as her character and her characters ‘outcome’ is Jessica Alba is as wooden as ever. I really keep hoping that one day Jessica Alba is going to take on a role that shows us she is more than just a pretty face but if this movie doesn’t do it for her I don’t know what will. Jessica plays a sadistic prostitute with lots of graphic and violent sex and so long as she isn’t speaking she does well enough in the role. The climax of her characters trajectory is easily one of the most brutal scenes I have seen in awhile and she does quite well once again only when she doesn’t speak and its left up to the cameraman and the editing room to tell the story. As pretty as Alba is I am concerned where she will be when she turns 40.
Overall The Killer Inside Me appears to suffer from poor editing, even worse directing and even despite Casey Affleck’s obvious skills he is not able to snatch this film out of the fire. The Killer Inside Me is a rental at best and only if you absolutely love the genre and cannot pass up seeing Jessica Alba in the buff playing a sadomasochist prostitute. ( which is part of the reason I got the movie I won’t lie ).
