Predators DVD Review

Predators DVD ReviewPredators is hitting Bluray and DVD tomorrow, October 19th and I had a chance to checkout an early copy on dvd. I was unfortunate enough to not see this movie in theatres because it was in and out so darn quick I missed it completely. A real bummer since I am a huge fan of the original two predator movies and wanted to see what Robert Rodriguez would do with the franchise.

PREDATORS is a bold new chapter in the Predator universe, shot under the creative auspices of Robert Rodriguez, stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realise they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey.

With the notable exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien predators.

Predators is an action packed horror film with our favourite scifi killers from deep space. It offers exactly what you might expect, tough guy characters, lots of carnage, an alien world and a whole lot of ass kicking good times. Predators does not break new ground with its visuals or storyline but it does bring new life to a franchise that has been bastardized by two very badly put together Alien vs Predator films.

Predators is not as creative as other works by Robert Rodriguez but it is true to the original films and delivers an experience that Predator fans will without a doubt love without going over old ground. Predators brings us to an alien world, with heroes replaced by misfits/mercenaries and killers and introduces new ‘alien challenges’ that make the film both unique and fun!  If you are worn down by Alien vs Predator and want to get back to the glory of the original films Robert Rodriguez’s PREDATORS will do just that while bringing something completely new to the plate.

Adrien Brody takes the lead in this film as Royce and for the most part does a pretty darn good job as the ‘bad guy with an attitude’. His ‘batman’ voice does get a bit annoying but overall he leads the film well and delivers a believable and complex character. The film co-stars Topher Grace as a ‘disgraced doctor’ and his character and acting is the stand out for the film. His character is the one odd man out in the mix of a team of murderous mercenaries and worse and his character offers a great level of depth that brings the story to new levels. Laurence Fishburne also stars and is the other great stand out in the film.

The special features on Predators did not impress me other then the motion comics but I very rarely pick up a DVD for special features. I am the kinda guy that watches the movie and then gets on with lief. Predators offers tons of action, a reasonable script and enough interesting characters to ensure that fans of the original Arnold Schwarzenager project are sure to love this film. If you love PREDATOR you will love Predators. Easily one of the best films in the franchise and its clear that Robert Rodriguez loved the original films by the effort he put into this sequel. I hope the rumours of another are true since I have already watched this one twice in three days.

  1. mark

As a fan of Predator movies threw out the years, I did feel a bit ripped off with this movie. Rodriguez’s films are generally rather bloody and violent and this movie lacked alot of that. A person/fan would have figured the gore level in the kills in this movie would be high, yet they were not. The 2 different species of Predators fighting should of been epic with the classic one killing one of the newer ones. Lack of high tech weapons were used in this film also and from a fan perspective, its a mistake. I mean the movie was based on their very own game reserve.
I do give Rodriguez credit as the story line is solid and the movie flows well. While above
