New on DVD and Blu-Ray October 19th: Back To the Future, Sex And The City 2, Alien Anthology And More!

Howdy folks! Welcome my weekly look at what’s new on DVD and Blu-ray. There’s tons of good stuff out this week, but before we can get to the goodies, we have one rather questionable disc to deal with first.

Sex And The City 2

Let’s get this one out of the way, shall we? Dear me. I’m completely against the notion of reviewing things I haven’t seen. In fact, I can’t stand the thought of it. But this one is so far off my radar that it might as well be in China. (If we can stick Sarah Jessica Parker there while we’re at it, I’d be delighted.)

Though I didn’t mind the bits and pieces I saw of the series, I can’t even begin to consider recommending this. The xenophobia that’s apparently on display in this one isn’t something that I can endorse, so avoid this one unless you’re having a root canal and need something  — anything — to take your mind off the pain.

I’d normally tell you what the bonus features are here, but hey, this is my column and I don’t want to. Besides, you’ll have already made your mind up whether you’re getting this or not.

Back To The Future (25th Anniversary Edition)

Now this is more like it. Perhaps my second favourite trilogy of all time behind the Toy Story series, if you don’t already love Back To The Future, there’s an issue that needs to be seriously addressed. Get this and watch it immediately. Even if you’re a massive fan and already have the DVDs, do everything you can to get this set on Blu-ray.

Of the three films I’ve see, Alien is my favourite. Which is yours?

New on DVD and Blu Ray October 19th: Back To the Future, Sex And The City 2, Alien Anthology And More!Winter’s Bone

This is one for you Oscar watchers out there. I’ve yet to see it, but by all accounts Jennifer Lawrence puts in a stellar turn as a young woman who is looking for her father who is on the run from the law. If she can’t find him, the family will lose their home as he had put their house up as bond collateral. Sounds intriguing to me, and I’m on board. I’ll definitely be renting this one.

  • Audio Commentary with Director Debra Granik
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Making of Winter’s Bone
  • Music Video ‘Angel Band,’ performed by Marideth Sisco

The Girl Who Played With Fire

I have to admit, I haven’t got into the whole Millennium Trilogy thing. I know, I know. Someone who claims to be as tapped into the cultural zeitgeist as myself should really have a hold on this stuff, but unfortunately I don’t.

From everything I’ve read and heard though, both the books and the films are top-notch. If you’ve seen The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and/or this one, let me know what I’m missing please! Otherwise, I’ll suggest a rental for this one.

  • Theatrical trailer
  • English dubbed version
