According to Reuters, Rolling Stone Keith Richards will be reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow’s father Captain Teague in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides.” In fact, he might be busy filming it right now.
This piece of news was revealed in an article about Richards’ autobiography “Life” (to be published on October 26). For those who may have forgotten, Depp himself played a big role in bringing Richards on set of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” – since actor always claimed he based his portrayal of Sparrow on the rock icon, Richards simply had to play the father.
It’s delightful news indeed – if anything at all is delightful about a sequel to a trilogy that has already fully exhausted the initial attractiveness of its characters and have pretty much gone mad by the end. Indeed, Richards’ cameo was probably the best part of Pirates 3. What’s unclear is how big Captain Teague’s role will be in the next movie – did they dare expand it this time?
“On Stranger Tides” – loosely based on a Tim Powers novel of the same name – sees Captains Sparrow and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) sail the seas in search of the Fountain of Youth. Keeping them company in the story are Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz). Since Rob Marshall replaced Gore Verbinsky in the director’s chair, there is hope that he manages to give the movie a fresher feel.
